Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Answers to the most common questions about Austrian roads, vignettes and traffic regulations.
Yes, a valid vignette or section-specific toll payment is required to use all Austrian motorways and expressways. The vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5t gross weight.
The vignette is available at petrol stations, tobacconists, ÖAMTC and ARBÖ offices, and online on the official Asfinag website (asfinag.at). Sales points are also available at border crossings.
Driving without a valid vignette is an administrative offence. A replacement toll of currently € 120 (car) or a fine of up to € 300 may be imposed. Controls are carried out by toll supervisors and police.
The Austrian annual vignette is valid for 14 months, from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the year after next. You can therefore buy it from December for the following year.
Yes, but motorcycles have their own, cheaper tariffs. The annual vignette for motorcycles costs € 38.20 (2025), the 2-month vignette € 14.50 and the 10-day vignette € 5.80.
The GO toll is a section-specific toll for vehicles over 3.5t gross weight. These vehicles do not need a vignette but require a GO-Box and pay the toll per kilometre on all motorways and expressways.
Yes, exempt are: military and police vehicles, vehicles with foreign diplomatic plates, vehicles over 3.5t (GO toll), mopeds up to 45 km/h, and vehicles with special permits.
The vignette entitles you to use all motorways and expressways in Austria. The section toll is an additional fee for certain sections (e.g. Brenner A13, Tauern A10), which must be paid even with a valid vignette.
You can buy the digital vignette on the asfinag.at website or in the Asfinag app. Enter your licence plate and choose the start date. The vignette is active immediately after purchase and is checked electronically.
On motorways the general limit is 130 km/h (100 km/h or 110 km/h on some sections), on rural roads 100 km/h and in urban areas 50 km/h. For new drivers (probationary licence) the motorway limit is 100 km/h.
Yes, in wintry road conditions (snow, ice, slush) winter tyres or snow chains are mandatory. There is no fixed winter tyre season; the requirement applies situationally. Violations are penalised with fines.
In Austria you must carry: warning triangle, first aid kit (with valid expiry date), high-visibility vest. Also recommended: fire extinguisher, tow rope, torch and snow chains in winter.
